I vote for the ZF 8 Speed: extremely fast shifting and good on efficiency. Could I be biased because I love the F-Type? ..maybe

Porsche's PDK is up there as well but I prefer the ZF; as an all around package its just better.

Ford's 6-speed Torqueshift.

That's what it took to break it. The all hailed Allison took a shit at 500hp and just over 1000 ft lbs.

I've experienced the ZF 8 in quite a few cars including the Jaguar F-Type V8S, BMW M235i, BMW 750li, and I do love it. Because of the additional ratios, you find yourself shifting a bit more to keep the car in the sweet spot on those really tight twists, kind of like an E30 M3 with a super close ratio manual gearbox.

BUT, I would have to say that BMW's latest DCT in the M3/4 is very intuitive and very responsive.

I would have to go with Volvo's 6AT in the S60. In D its smooth, but in Sport mode it's telepathic. Drives exactly how I would drive it as a manual.

GM Th-350. Why? Because they're crazy cheap because millions were made and can be put in anything if you try hard enough. Three gears is all you need.

I agree. That many gears can be a bit too much sometimes..

As tiresome as this is to hear for some, I can't bring myself to enjoy driving a car so much without a clutch pedal under my left foot and a gear lever in my right hand. I'm sure this is different for others but it's just not the same for me; I'm always missing out on something whether it's a crappy 4 speed slushbox, a decent 6 speed with paddles, an impressive ZF8, or incredibly quick DCT. I do respect the capability of many cars when a good auto 'box is combined with other technologies my luddite mindset rejects.

I'd go with MB's 5G-tronic, GM's 700R4, ZF's 8 speed, Ferrari's later F1 gearboxes, BMW's SMG III, or PDK. This is mostly from what I hear, for the record.

Yes, the block and internals of the engine were stock as well, they just quit dynoing when the trans went. Estimates put the actual power at 1000 at crank, just the busted trans killed a bit of it.

NAG1. Does just fine for my Magnum, and after 147k miles and a fluid change, it's ready to do another 147k at least. Very robust. Now, Im sure new transmissions are plenty capable, but the NAG1 has been put into many many vehicles (it's also known as the Mercedes 722.6).

The ones that last hundreds of thousands of miles with no problems. I can nominate Toyota's A541E.

Maybe Tesla's single-speed transmission counts? It shouldn't give any problems since there's no shifting involved!

Saab's Sensonic was good in theory, but unfortunately it never worked and wasn't sold over here. Manual shifting, automated clutch.

Toyota's automatics are very good and smooth shifting for a long long time. GM makes some good ones, too (even the expensive European companies used to buy their automatics from GM, until the DCT craze at least).

CVT's are cool, but they aren't reliable enough to answer your question.

DCT's are totally unfit for daily driving, high-maintenance, and Ford has ruined their reputation for a long time. They should've used a CVT or a regular automatic instead. The recalls would've been the prefect time to replace them.

Honda's automatic transmissions are pretty good, and they've been making automated manuals longer than almost anybody else. Not as reliable as a conventionally-designed autobox, but still better than a DCT or CVT.

My next vehicle will probably be a Powerstroke or a Tacoma. The Toyota fanboy/smart person in me tells me that is the best bet, but torque puts up a strong argument. I have plenty of time to decide though, since I'm broke.

I agree with you on the ZF 8 speed. I really don't like automatic transmission (I own three manuals and one auto), but the ZF 8 speed feels really good. I recently picked up an X1 for my wife (I own an E30 which cancels out the Teutonic automotive sin that is the X1), and I actually enjoy the ZF 8. It's fast, smooth, and it rings out the revs like you would on a manual. I still enjoy driving my manual cars more.

For paddles I def would say the f type v8. For speed, and the fart of exhaust when shifting up and the roar when shifting down, even better. But there's a 3rd category of transmissions, which are the one's that operate better in automatic mode than with the paddles. For this I'd say the Merc clk63 black series. I know I know, it is absolute shit in paddle mode but if you just let it do the changes for you it's actually not terrible. Stays in gear for a long time when driving hard, and automatically downshifts anytime you get a little bit into the brakes. Not bad. Granted I'd still like to make my own decisions as to what gear I should be in.
